Make Smarter - Paul Irish, Cory Doctorow, Flexible Organizations, API-Centric Web Apps, Colored Rasters with GDAL

First up in this month’s make smarter is a talk by Paul Irish on Developing HTML5 for a Cross Browser World (slideshow). There’s a lot of great information, but my favorite take away is this:

Aim for a great experience - an excellent experience is better than feature parity across browsers.

Next up is a long talk by Cory Doctorow called The Coming War on General Computation. Cory has given a lot of great talks on copyright, and this talk is on a timely subject - how general purpose computers are being replaced by locked-down appliances. Also, if you haven’t read it already, I can’t recommend Little Brother enough.

opensource.com had a good article called Is your organization fit for heretics? It reads like a dystopian nightmare for micro-managers, but it’s important if you want to build a responsive and innovative team or organization.

nettutsplus has a great tutorial on Creating an API-Centric Web Application. If you aren’t doing this already, work through the tutorial. No app should be an island.

And finally, the Linfiniti Geo Blog has a great post on Creating coloured rasters with GDAL. If you haven’t checked out Linfiniti’s blog, you should - I’ve found it to be a constant source of great information.
