I also should have mentioned MGRS and USNG are identical for NAD83. Where they diverge is MGRS has a different representation system for NAD 27, while USNG uses the same representation for both datums, making the complete USNG address something like 18SUJ2348306479 (NAD38). When you wanted to meet someone at a particular point and you both had the same quad map, you could say "let's meet at 725551" or "2551" You'd both know how far it was, and in what direction, from your locations.
