SVG symbols in the Google Maps API 3.9 - elevations along a path

SVG symbols is one the the big new things in the Google Maps API v3.9. They showed it in a variety of ways at Google I/O (see the last Make Smarter), but one of my favorites was when they took the elevation service and drew the elevation as lines along the elevation path.

They didn’t really talk much about the code surrounding that example, and I can think of absolutely no reason why I’d want to do that. I had to take a stab at it regardless. Here’s how they might have done it:
